Trace an agent run
This guide shows how to record OpenTelemetry spans for each build_agent run. To build the agent first, see Retrieve and answer.
Prerequisites
Install the agent and observability extras:
pip install 'agentic-graphrag[neo4j,agents,observability]'
Without the observability extra, build_agent(tracer=...) raises AgentMissingExtraError that names agentic-graphrag[observability].
Record spans in memory
The block below does three things. It creates a tracer with an in-memory exporter. It passes the tracer to build_agent and runs the agent. It then reads the tool spans from the exporter.
import asyncio
from opentelemetry.sdk.trace import TracerProvider
from opentelemetry.sdk.trace.export import SimpleSpanProcessor
from opentelemetry.sdk.trace.export.in_memory_span_exporter import InMemorySpanExporter
from agrag.agents.build import build_agent
from agrag.agents.settings import AgentLLMSettings
from agrag.common.data_models.graph_schema import GENERIC
from agrag.embedding import build_embedder
from agrag.graphdb import build_graph_store
from agrag.ingestion import Graph
from agrag.ingestion.extract import GlinerExtractor
from agrag.retrieval.search_engine import SearchEngine
exporter = InMemorySpanExporter()
provider = TracerProvider()
provider.add_span_processor(SimpleSpanProcessor(exporter))
tracer = provider.get_tracer("my-app")
async def main() -> None:
graph_store = build_graph_store("neo4j")
embedder = build_embedder("ibm-granite/granite-embedding-small-english-r2")
graph = await Graph.open(
schema=GENERIC,
graph_store=graph_store,
embedder=embedder,
extractor=GlinerExtractor(),
)
try:
await graph.add(text="Aspirin treats headaches. Ibuprofen also treats headaches.")
engine = SearchEngine(graph_store=graph_store, embedder=embedder)
agent = build_agent(
engine=engine,
llm_settings=AgentLLMSettings.from_openai_compatible_env(),
graph_schema=GENERIC,
tracer=tracer,
)
await agent.ainvoke({
"messages": [
{"role": "user", "content": "What treats headaches?"}
]
})
finally:
await graph_store.close()
asyncio.run(main())
spans = exporter.get_finished_spans()
names = {span.context.span_id: span.name for span in spans}
for span in spans:
if span.attributes.get("openinference.span.kind") == "TOOL":
parent = names.get(span.parent.span_id) if span.parent else None
print(f"{span.name} (parent={parent})")
The tracer argument is keyword-only. The default is None, which turns tracing off. build_agent does not install global instrumentation.
Each run produces these spans:
TOOLspans for thetasktool and for each researcher tool. The researcher's inner tool calls, such assearch_source_textandtraverse_from_entity, are descendants of thetaskspan. Their parents aretoolsspans, which sit under aresearcherspan, which sits under thetaskspan.LLMspans with thellm.model_nameattribute and token counts.CHAINspans for graph nodes. Filter onopeninference.span.kindto skip them.
The agent spans are children of the span that is active when you call ainvoke. To group a run under your own span, call ainvoke inside tracer.start_as_current_span("my-request").
Send spans to an OTLP endpoint
Replace the in-memory exporter with an OTLP exporter and a batch processor. Use the endpoint of your collector, or of Phoenix.
from opentelemetry.exporter.otlp.proto.grpc.trace_exporter import OTLPSpanExporter
from opentelemetry.sdk.trace import TracerProvider
from opentelemetry.sdk.trace.export import BatchSpanProcessor
provider = TracerProvider()
provider.add_span_processor(
BatchSpanProcessor(OTLPSpanExporter(endpoint="http://localhost:4317"))
)
tracer = provider.get_tracer("my-app")
Pass this tracer to build_agent as in the previous section. Call provider.shutdown() before your program exits, so the processor sends the last spans.
Spans always hold full text
Spans hold the question, the tool inputs, and the evidence text. There is no option to hide them on the agent path. To record less, redact in the exporter with a SpanProcessor that scrubs span attributes before export, or run without a tracer.
Trace the rest of the library with the same tracer
The same tracer traces every other component that calls an LLM, so one run of an ingestion or retrieval pipeline produces a single connected trace. For a connected retrieval trace, pass one tracer to all five: SearchEngine, GraphStore, VectorStore, Embedder and build_agent. The engine does not push its tracer into its stores, so a store built without the tracer exports adapter spans that no retrieval span connects to. Pass it wherever a component takes tracer=:
The next block is a reference. tracer, chunks_by_id, graph_store, schema, and chat_model stand for objects that your application already builds.
from agrag.agents.model import build_chat_model
from agrag.eval.judge import ChatModelJudge
from agrag.ingestion.extract import (
BAMLExtractor,
EscalatingExtractor,
ExtractionLLMSettings,
GlinerExtractor,
)
from agrag.retrieval.retrievers.text2cypher import Text2CypherRetriever
# Extraction
extractor = BAMLExtractor(
settings=ExtractionLLMSettings.from_openai_compatible_env(), tracer=tracer
)
# An escalating extractor traces its own decision as well
escalating = EscalatingExtractor(
primary=GlinerExtractor(tracer=tracer),
escalate_to=extractor,
tracer=tracer,
)
# Resolution, when you build the comparator yourself
from agrag.ingestion.resolve.resolver import LLMVerify
verifier = LLMVerify(chunks_by_id=chunks_by_id, tracer=tracer)
# Text2cypher
retriever = Text2CypherRetriever(
graph_store=graph_store, schema=schema, tracer=tracer
)
# The eval judge
judge = ChatModelJudge(chat_model, "gpt-4o-mini", tracer=tracer)
Graph passes its own tracer down to the resolution and merge steps it runs, and community report generation reads the same tracer. A Graph.open(...) or Graph.add(...) built with a tracer needs nothing extra.
Inside an agent run, every retrieval span nests under the TOOL span of the tool call that made it, and through the task span under the researcher or verifier that delegated it. A trace answers which tool call and which subagent produced a given graph query or embedding call. Retrieval spans hold the full result text. The arrays agrag.result_texts and agrag.result_ids record every result, uncapped.
The span names and attributes these components emit are listed in Trace Spans.
